Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

  • What type of school is Thrive Academy?

Thrive Academy is a state-funded, public boarding school with a driven vision to provide an equitable education experience.

  • What is the process for admission?

Students must apply and be accepted to attend Thrive Academy. The process begins when a family fills out the online application. After that, our admissions team will contact you for an initial screening and to schedule a tour and interview. Following the tour and interview, the admissions team will decide on eligibility and notify you via email or phone. Once you have accepted the space at Thrive Academy you will have 1 week to complete the enrollment documents. Spaces are allotted based on students’ interviews and current available bed space. If a student meets the admissions requirements but a bed is not currently available, they will be placed on a waitlist for an open bed.

  • What is the enrollment deadline?

Thrive Academy accepts students continuously if we have the means to accommodate them on the residential side. As beds become available, we admit students from our waitlist. Please apply today if you are interested in becoming a part of the Thrive family.

  • Do students reside permanently?

No. Students arrive on campus Sunday evenings and are returned home Friday evening. We honor a traditional Monday-Friday school schedule.

  • Am I responsible for my child's transportation?

No. Thrive provides transportation on buses within East Baton Rouge Parish and on vans for the surrounding parishes.

  • Is there adult supervision at all times?

Yes. During the school day, the students are taught by their teachers as they would be at any other school. In the afternoon/evening, Mentors work with and supervise, the students from 3:30 pm - 12:00 am. At midnight, an overnight security team takes over and monitors students until 6:30 am when the Mentors wake the students up. There are cameras in both the school building and the dorm. Security monitors cameras all night as well as making hourly rounds through the dorms.

  • What do their living spaces look like?

Each grade-level unit features a dormitory-style suite which is designed with a full kitchen and common area, a community bathroom - including 3 restroom stalls, four shower stalls, a large vanity-style sink area, 7 student bedrooms, and 2 adult apartments. Students are two to a room and have their own dresser drawers and small closet.

  • Are the units co-ed?

No. Students are only co-ed during the school day. The dormitory is separated and sectioned by floors. Each unit houses separate genders. All doors, including stairwells, are card access only. The system includes safety alarms as added precaution per suite.

  • Do the administrators live on campus?

No, they do not. The residential mentors live on campus with the students. Administrators are on campus from 7:30 am - 10 pm. They are accessible via phone around the clock for emergency purposes.

  • What do I need to bring?

Once a student is accepted, they will be given a suggested packing list. Twin bedding, uniforms, after-school and night clothing, personal hygiene toiletries, towels, and a closet lock, are the most essential items. For families unable to provide these items due to financial strain, Thrive is able to help.

  • Does my student have to pay for meals?

No. All food is serviced through the National School Lunch/Supper Program, including breakfast, lunch, light after-school snacks, and dinner. Chartwells cater all meals. Students can bring snacks as long as they are labeled and housed in their suites' pantry. Students are not permitted to keep food in their dorm rooms.

  • Do students need to bring money at all?

Not typically. Our campus does not have any vending services. Students bring small amounts of money to order food, occasionally, and purchase concessions at sporting events. Monthly field trips are covered by the school. However, if their suite groups plan an outing (like dinner out or a movie), the cost will be upon the student.

  • How much is tuition at Thrive?

Thrive is a tuition-free public school.

  • What is the process for parental visitation?

Yes. We kindly ask that students only be checked out due to severe illness, doctor appointments, or emergencies and that the school day is reserved for uninterrupted instructional time as much as possible. Parents often bring food/cake to celebrate birthdays or special occasions, however, we do not allow daily visits or checkouts. It is vital that the student adapt to living here so they become fully invested in the program. Please refer to the full visitation policy, outlined in our handbook for more details.

  • What courses are offered at Thrive Academy?

Thrive follows the standards and graduation requirements outlined by the Louisiana Department of Education. Thrive offers all courses that target graduation as well as AP Courses, Credit Recovery Courses, Dual Enrollment Courses, and Technical education courses.

  • If students are behind, how are they placed?

Parents can request an SBLC committee review in middle school in order to move students to their appropriate grades. The SBLC committee will determine if this move is appropriate based on a review of the student’s file. In 8th grade and in High School students can apply to be a part of the accelerated program. This program is specifically targeted toward students who are not on the appropriate graduation track
